Where should I publish?

There are no clear-cut guidelines for determining the most appropriate route to publishing your work. In fact, a wide range of factors can have some bearing your choice. You will certainly be influenced primarily by what your colleagues and/or supervisor have to say on the matter, and the traditions of your particular academic discipline obviously also play a crucial role.

What is more, there may be certain external requirements with regard to dissemination of your research. These requirements could be stipulated by external funding bodies or research councils, they could be publication requirements stipulated by the university or they could even be a political stipulation that the research should have as wide a reach as possible. All these influences and requirements can complicate the choice of publication channel.
