Protect your copyright

As an employee of an educational institution you own the copyright to work created in connection with your employment, unless otherwise stipulated by your terms of employment.

When your work is published, you sign an agreement with the publisher setting out what part of the copyright ownership is transferred to the publisher after publication.

Thus it is important before publishing your work to consider to what extent you wish copyright ownership to be transferred to the publisher, as this can have a bearing on how you may use your own publications later. For example, you might wish to have the option of posting your article on your own homepage or publishing your article via an open access platform.
